As President and Chief Executive Officer of Boyne Resorts, Stephen Kircher leads the third largest mountain resort company in North America. Headquartered in northern Michigan, Boyne Resorts owns and operates mountain and lakeside resorts, ski areas, attractions and a retail division in locations spanning from British Columbia to Maine.
Boyne Resorts was founded in 1947 by Stephen’s father who opened a ski resort in the northwest tip of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Growing up at his family’s ski and golf resorts, Stephen began his career in the family business in 1988 after earning his MBA and gaining experience crucial to the company’s growth. He had oversight of multiple resort projects and represented the company’s stake in the billion-dollar Bay Harbor, Michigan development which launched in 1996.
Made president of Boyne Resorts’ eastern operations in 2002, Stephen initiated an organizational transition that positioned the company for operational and geographical growth. In addition to spearheading multiple condo-hotel projects, envisioning the transformational renaissance of the company’s first resort–Boyne Mountain, engaging as supporting architect with Arthur Hills on golf course designs at Bay Harbor and Boyne Highlands, and securing a Marriott International franchise, he led Boyne Resorts’ monumental expansion in 2006, taking its portfolio from eight to twelve properties.
Stephen became sole president and CEO in 2016, overseeing Boyne Resorts’ operations at eleven locations in seven U.S. states and one Canadian province. In 2018, he shepherded a game-changing transaction involving the company’s issuance of actively traded senior secured notes and acquisition of seven resorts and an attraction it had been operating.
Across a team of 10,000+ employees, Stephen drives innovation and keeps focus on the long term. He is a pioneering leader and maintains direct oversight of the master planning process at each property.
Stephen is a member of YPO Gold, a global leadership organization. He is a governor-appointed member of Michigan Travel Commission, recently serving as Chair of the Commission’s Board of Directors. He is a member of the Board of Directors for National Ski Areas Association and U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame, and a member of Business Leaders for Michigan.
Attending Northwestern University and Michigan State University to complete his undergraduate studies, Stephen earned his Master of Business Administration from Boston College. Additionally, he has completed several executive development programs including those at Wharton and Harvard Business School, and continues to pursue educational opportunities through YPO.
Stephen and his wife, Molly live in northern Michigan and have four children, ages 3-19. He enjoys skiing/snowboarding, golf, sailing and travel.
